FAQS
What is a Security Risk Assessment?
A security Risk assessment is “a fundamental examination that can include review of documentation, policies, facilities, technology, protection strategies, staffing, training, and other key indicators to determine the present state of the protection programme (security) in an effort to identify deficiencies and even excesses is in order to make recommendations for improvement based on proven methods.” This process has also been known as a security audit, a risk assessment, a security survey and security assessment.
The Security Risk Assessment can be as wide ranging or as limited as you need, but in general it is best to undertake a comprehensive assessment to ensure you have the greatest clarity of your organisations strengths and vulnerabilities.
How often should my enterprise have a Security Risk Assessment undertaken?
A Security Risk Assessment should be undertaken at a minimum every 3 years. However many organisations choose to have the security risk assessments done every 2 years.
Unfortunately many organisations only undertake Security Risk Assessments after their vulnerabilities have been exploited by criminals or insider threats. This is a case of too little too late. Best practice stipulates the Security Risk Assessment process should be a proactive strategy not a reactive response. But this is not to say it should not be undertaken if your enterprise has fallen victim to a malicious act. It is not uncommon for offenders and hostile groups to return in the 12 to 18 months following the first incident. This is usually enough time for the property stolen to be replaced and for complacency to set back in amongst staff. This provides these threat actors ease of execution as well as a level of knowledge they did not previously have when they first victimised you. As such you become a better target to these people than you were originally.
Why do I need to have a Security Risk Assessment Undertaken?
There are numerous reasons why your organisation needs to undertake a Security Risk Assessment. Perhaps the first is to ensure compliance with Workplace Health and Safety legislation. Under Workplace Health & Safety legislation the employer is required to maintain a safe workplace for their employees. This includes minimizing the risk of workplace violence and accidents caused by malicious damage.
A second reason to undertake a Security Risk Assessment is to reduce the risk of litigation. If someone is injured (physically or mentally) due to a failure or vulnerability in your security practices, an assessment by a qualified security consultant will reduce the risk of litigation being successful. Yet another reason is insurance. Increases in losses due to criminal activity or breraches in security increase the cost of your insurance premiums and may see it increasingly difficult to obtain insurance. In fact insurance agencies may choose not to insure you if you did not address a risk properly which would require an appropriate assessment being undertaken of the risks and the proper level of mitigation being undertaken.
Finally the most important reason to have a Security Risk Assessment undertaken is to ensure the ongoing resilience and smooth operation of your organisation. When undertaken by a qualified and skilled consultant a Security Risk Assessment will show you where you are overspending on security and where your organization is exposed. Each time a vulnerability is exploited , be it cyber-attack, dissemination of intellectual property or criminal acts the organization suffers down time, lost revenue, reduced morale, higher turnover of staff and reputational damage. This often results in higher costs and lower profits as well as the human toll. A Security Risk Assessment will reduce to the greatest extent the likelihood of your organisation suffering this fate and ensure your ongoing prosperity.
